BookNook Efficacy Study Validates Positive Impact on Student Outcomes
BookNook announces high-impact tutoring model meets the ESSA Level III “Promising Evidence” standard in comprehensive efficacy study conducted by LearnPlatform.
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (October 25, 2024) -- BookNook announced today the results of a comprehensive efficacy study conducted by LearnPlatform by Instructure, demonstrating that BookNook’s high-impact tutoring model meets the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) Level III “Promising Evidence” standard. The study was conducted in collaboration with the San Francisco Education Fund, and data was collected from a large public school district in California, evaluating the impact of BookNook’s program on student reading outcomes.
The research, conducted over the 2023-24 school year, included 207 students from grades 1 to 5 who participated in BookNook's online tutoring program. The study found that students who engaged more frequently with BookNook showed significantly higher gains in reading scores compared to their peers. On average, students who completed more than 24 sessions improved by approximately three percentile points on their end-of-year reading assessments, accounting for baseline performance, special education, and English language learner status.
This study confirms the effectiveness of our approach in providing evidence-based support to help students achieve reading success. We are proud to offer a solution that not only bridges learning gaps but also meets rigorous standards for educational effectiveness.

The findings indicated a positive and statistically significant relationship between the number of tutoring sessions completed and student reading development outcomes. The study’s results align with ESSA Level III criteria by using a correlational study design with proper statistical controls, demonstrating at least one significant positive effect on student outcomes.
LearnPlatform researchers, led by Dr. Alexandra Lee and Dr. Meetal Shah, used comprehensive methods, including linear regression models and propensity score matching, to ensure the robustness of the results. The study also highlighted that over 65% of students participated in BookNook sessions outside regular school hours, showcasing the program’s flexibility and adaptability to various learning environments.
This study expands our research initiatives and complements BookNook’s established ESSA Level I evidence status for our Reading product, reinforcing our commitment to continuously validate and enhance the impact of our programs in diverse educational settings.
